According to some experts, the word “lifestyles” actually defines nothing more than the habits, attitudes, behaviors, and preferences of a person, group, or society. The word was first introduced by Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler in his famous 1929 book, The Case of Miss R. As he defined the concept, it had more to do with defining behavior than individual characteristics, as he pointed out that the behavior is not controlled by the brain but influenced by environmental factors. Adler used the word “lifestyle” to describe the framework of his theory.
Lifestyle was further developed by American psychiatrist and social science professor Williambard in his important book, Social Learning and Language Development. According to this concept, there are four major influences of all behaviors: cognitive, experiential, motivational, and social. A psychologist who uses the term “lifestyle” in this context has to be highly trained as the concept of “lifestyle” is so wide and complex. For example, a person’s approach to personal hygiene may depend on the norms of a certain community, whereas a drug user’s choice of behavior may be completely different from a non-drug user.
Many proponents of LIFESTYLE believe that a lot of the problems we face today – from obesity, smoking, and drug addiction to political and social woes – stem from bad choices made by people in their environment and their past. They argue that an individual’s choices can have profound and far-reaching effects on their future, even when those choices are not consciously made. This concept of environment and past influences is called the LIFESTYLE theory, after the French word for “lifestyle”. In the field of social media, this concept has found great currency; its adherents assert that a person’s online activities reveal much about his character, attitudes, values, beliefs, and underlying thoughts. The theories of Alfred Adler and Martin Seligman are common among the many applications of LIFESTYLE.
The word lifestyle content was coined by Martin F.ichter and his associate Frank Irvine to describe a set of tactics for encouraging consumers to adopt a brand or lifestyle. The techniques were developed after their experiences at the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association respectively. The concepts of LIFESTYLE are closely identified with these associations, although the reference to the word lifestyle itself does not appear.
The internet has been used widely to disseminate information about lifestyles; however, the online world has also allowed LIFESTYLE to become a popular keywords in website content. The concepts of a minimalist lifestyle, healthy lifestyle, frugal lifestyle, organic lifestyle, vegetarian lifestyle, and other such ideas are now commonplace in most web pages. The concept of LIFESTYLE has therefore become a way for many people to distinguish themselves from the crowd and communicate their ideas about how a person could lead a more simple, practical, and environmentally friendly life.
The original intent of the original minimalist movement, which surfaced in the early 1960s, was to promote an idea of a healthier, simpler, and less stressful life through practices that focused on improving the physical and psychological well-being of the individual. It was felt that people should live longer, eat healthier, and minimize their use of stimulants. As more individuals began to experiment with such ideas, it was discovered that a number of physical and psychological problems, including chronic pain, depression, and anxiety, were associated with these lifestyle changes. The resulting practice was called LIFESTYLE, which became an informal term to describe these ideas and practices. The Vegan Lifestyle Association and Vegan Lifestyle Magazine emerged as organizations focused on promoting the Vegan lifestyle, promoting health awareness, promoting animal rights, educating individuals about the needs of animals around the world, and promoting awareness of other related areas. These organizations continue to promote the Vegan lifestyle and offer a number of resources for those who are interested in creating a more healthy life based on the Vegan diet.
